The Board has the floor

PensionUpdate#53

We sometimes get the question: who is on the Pension Fund Board and what do you all do? In each Pension?Update, one Board member has the floor to share more about themselves, the Board, and their role in it.

Arno de Ritter works as a Production Engineer in the Polyurethanes/Polyglycol (PU/PG) department at the Terneuzen Site. 'I am responsible for the safe and efficient production of chemical additives and foams that are ultimately used in numerous everyday applications.'

He has held a wide variety of positions at Dow. 'I have worked here in various roles for 26 years. I've had the pleasure of working in a 24/7 shift system, I've worked with the Supply Chain to coordinate production, shaped EH&S for the crackers and, within Site Logistics, coordinate the efficient loading and unloading of ships and trains. To eventually return where I started: in PU/PG.'

Steep learning curve

In addition to this role, Arno just completed his first term on the Works Council. 'I will continue this work for the next four years. This has introduced me to the fascinating world of pensions, which eventually led me to the Pension Fund Board.' Since 2024, he has been one of three board members representing employees. 'It has meant a steep learning curve. Fortunately, I find the subject tremendously interesting and enjoy doing this work.'

'There is currently a lot of common ground between my work for the Board and my role on the Works Council. Our fund is currently exploring the option of transferring all accrued pensions to an insurer. The Works Council also has a voice in this. Naturally this raises questions among our participants, making clear and effective communication about this essential.'

Communications committee

'The Fund's communications committee therefore was a perfect match for me. Together with our pension administrator AZL, we do our utmost to manage all information flows. For example, there is a separate page on our website "The Revised Pension System and the Fund’s Future" so that everyone is kept up to date on the latest developments.’

'Communication remains crucial within our Fund to keep everyone involved in the changes. That is important, to ensure that members are and stay well informed about everything concerning pensions. Especially now that developments are moving fast and rules are changing.'
