In 2023 you will start to receive AOW when you reach an age of 66 and 10 months. For the next three years (2024, 2025 and 2026) the AOW starting age is fixed at 67 years. There after the AOW starting age will increase with the life expectance (reference point 2025) in the ratio of 3 months for each full year (4.5 months) increase in lifetime expectance.
Statistics Netherlands calculates this by looking at its annual forecast for the remaining life expectancy of 65-year-olds.
An ageing population
The state pension age is increasing because the Statistics Netherlands expects the population to live longer. Every employee in the Netherlands supports/finances the state pensions of older people. In order to keep the state pensions affordable the starting age of state pension has to rise with increasing lifetime expectance.
