Pension with the EX-factor

A new pension system is being introduced. What does that mean for you?

In this PensionUpdate, we talk to Anton van Beek, who is involved in pensions from the employers’ perspective.

The voice of 4,000 employees

With its 4,000 members of staff in the Netherlands, Dow is a major employer. Anton tells us: ‘We believe that it’s important to make our voice heard when it comes to issues such as sustainability and recycling of waste streams. Pensions are also a topic that is high on the agenda. We’re making our voice heard in The Hague and playing our part to ensure pensions in the Netherlands are properly organised. Ultimately, politicians together with the government will decide how the pension system will be structured.’

Making plans together

In the meantime, Dow is also starting the process of introducing a fair, new pension scheme for all employees. ‘“Together” is the operative word,’ Anton continues. ‘Representatives of the three works councils will form a committee together with the employer. Apart from engaging in consultations with social partners, the pension fund is also involved and we seek advice from external experts if necessary.’ Pension benefits are a very important part of the remuneration that Dow employees receive. ‘What we are noticing is that when people choose an employer, they also take the pension scheme into consideration, more so than in the past. This is because the media has been putting the spotlight on pensions a lot in recent years. That was different twenty years ago.’

Dow takes good care of you

Good employment practices are important. We want you to retire comfortably and not to have pension worries in the future. Satisfied people have positive things to say to the outside world. Our pension must be in line with the market, fair for everyone, and within the framework of laws and regulations. We are embarking on a long journey, and we would like to take you with us. As soon as there is more clarity or news, we will let you know.

Ask your question!

Anton rounds off by saying, ‘There’s no need not worry. What I do want to say is that you must not hesitate to ask your leader, HR, or works council if you have any concerns. You can also turn to the pension fund. You don’t have to read and understand everything – we’ll do that together. We’re looking for the EX-factor when it comes to this too!”

Anton van Beek is responsible for the Western Europe region.
The EX-factor is short for ‘Employee eXperience’.
